Picking runners on a budget: favourites, outsiders and your Stable Star

You cannot afford every favourite. How to mix strong picks and value runners, and where to use your Stable Star.

With six races and one budget, you cannot back the favourite in every race. The skill is in deciding where to spend.

Spend in small fields

Favourites in small fields win often but earn fewer points. In big handicaps a cheaper horse can place and score more.

Look for value

  • Recent good runs at the same course or distance.
  • The going: some horses only show their best on soft or good ground.
  • Trainers and jockeys in form at the meeting.

Using your Stable Star

Doubling a short priced favourite in a small field is safe but limited. Doubling a solid runner in a big field gives you the chance of a big score.

Check before the off

Non runners and going changes are common on race day. Look at your stable again shortly before the first race.
